Theme:“Sustainable Futures and Innovation for the New Philippines (Bagong Pilipinas)”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Sustainability Conference is an annual event that brings together higher education institutions (HEIs), government agencies, and communities of practice to share initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Now in its third year this 2024, the conference hinges on the theme \u201cSustainable Futures and Innovation for the New Philippines (Bagong Pilipinas)\u201d within the matrix of the futures thinking framework and the national government\u2019s vision of Bagong Pilipinas or New Philippines, which explores diverse and inclusive pathways in enhancing strategic foresight for a sustainable and progressive society. This event is organized by the Kaugmaon sa Lambuang Nasud (KaLambuan), the Central Visayas Consortium of State Universities (Cebu Technological University, Cebu Normal University, Bohol Island State University, Negros Oriental State University, and Siquijor State College) and professional organization for futures thinking initiatives. It welcomes participation from all HEIs and government agencies nationwide, fostering the sharing of relevant experiences, research, extension and other endeavors.

We would like to invite you to the National Sustainability Conferences for Philippine Higher Education Institutions and Government Agencies (SustainPHEIGov)<\/strong>, spearheaded by KaLambuan 7 (Kaugmaon sa Lambuang Siyete), the Regional Consortium of Futures Thinking of State Universities and Colleges of Central Visayas (CTU, CNU, NORSU, SSC, BISU) of Region VII<\/strong>, in collaboration with Philippine Association of Research Managers, Inc. (PHILARM), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Science and Technology Region 7 (DOST-7), Philippine Agriculture & Fisheries Biotechnology Program, Philippine Carabao Center, National Academy of Science and Technology, Outstanding Young Scientists, Inc.,<\/strong> and AltPayNet Corp.<\/strong> The event will be conducted from November 13-15, 2024 (Agri-Fisheries and Food Systems Conference) and November 25-27, 2024 (Education, Arts and Sciences Conference) in a hybrid format <\/strong>via online platform and onsite venue at the Cebu Technological University- Carmen Campus and Danao Campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference aim to promote and mainstream the importance of sustainability in Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and government agencies by disseminating knowledge and best practices among all stakeholders and establishing a network for future collaboration. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to move beyond traditional approaches and build sustainable solutions for the 21st century. Despite this awareness, several challenges exist towards institutionalizing sustainability in HEIs and government organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The different conference clusters will feature the following disciplines\/areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. November 13-15, 2024 –  Agri-Fisheries and Food Systems Conference<\/strong> at CTU Carmen Campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. November 18-20, 2024- Engineering and Technology Conference<\/strong> at NORSU<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. November 25-27, 2024 – Arts, Education and Sciences Conference <\/strong>at CTU Danao Campus<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The conference will convene representatives from different HEIs, government agencies, and private organizations to discuss sustainability initiatives further and contribute to developing a more sustainable Philippines for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Look back at the 2nd Sustainability Conference<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 2nd National Sustainability Summits for Agri-Fisheries and Food Systems gathered faculty and experts from the different State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and regional and national agencies on July 4 to 6, 2023, via a hybrid format (at the Ocean Heaven Resort in Camotes Island, San Francisco, Cebu and via Zoom platform) to impart sustainability knowledge and practices in agriculture, fisheries, and food systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The summit inaugurated a trilogy of conferences under the theme “Sustainability for the Future\u201d and attracted researchers and participants from the Visayas, Central Luzon, Bicol, and Western Mindanao regions. The summit aims to lay a foundation for an ever-evolving tapestry of initiatives to shape a sustainable future for these vital sectors in the Philippines by weaving together the strands of knowledge and connecting stakeholders from diverse fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The summit was honored by the presence of Hon. Alfredo Arquillano, Jr., Municipal Mayor of San Francisco, Camotes, Cebu, who warmly welcomed the participants to the picturesque island, just an hour and a half boat ride from the main island of Cebu. It featured a distinguished lineup of keynote speakers, including Dr. Roel R. Suralta, Scientist III from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), who delivered an insightful onsite keynote speech on Sustainable Farming Systems. Additionally, the summit hosted four esteemed online keynote speakers: Dr. Melvin B. Carlos, Deputy Executive Director for Administration, Resource Management, and Support Services of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) and President of the Philippine Association of Research Managers, Inc. (PHILARM); Dr. Claro N. Mingala, Scientist IV and Program Director of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Biotechnology Program Office, and OIC Deputy Executive Director of the DA Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC); Dr. Allan L. Poquita, Regional Director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office VII; and Dr. Caro B. Salces, OIC-Executive Director of the DA-PCC National Headquarters and Genepool. These esteemed speakers provided valuable insights and perspectives on scaling science, applications of biotechnology, and updates and opportunities in the Philippine Carabao Industry, all aimed at promoting sustainable practices in agri-fisheries and food systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The event was led by Cebu Technological University (CTU) under the leadership of Dr. Adrian P. Yba\u00f1ez, CTU futures thinking focal person, in collaboration with the DOST Regional Office VII, DOST Outstanding Young Scientists, Inc. (DOST-OYSI), DOST National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST), Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries Biotechnology Program, DA-PCC, PHILARM, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), BFAR Regional Office VII, AltPayNet Corp, and the KaLambuan 7 (Kaugmaon sa Lambuang Siyete), the regional consortium of State Universities and Colleges of Central Visayas for futures thinking comprised of the CTU, Cebu Normal University (CNU), Negors Oriental State University (NORSU), Siquijor State College (SSC), and Bohol Island State University (BISU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
